Dance Me to the End of Love - Vettriano Paintings for Sale

"Dance Me to the End of Love" is a 1984 song by Leonard Cohen. It was first performed by Cohen on his 1984 album Various Positions. It has been recorded by various artists and in 2009 was described as "trembling on the brink of becoming a standard."

The Scottish painter Jack Vettriano created a painting with the same title. He has also made two other paintings named after and inspired by Leonard Cohen works: one based on Cohen's novel Beautiful Losers and the other inspired by his song "Bird on the Wire". When asked on Desert Island Discs,[11] Vettriano mentioned Leonard Cohen's album I'm Your Man as one of his must-have records.

Dance Me to the End of Love is a modern day masterpiece completed in 1998. Created by the self-taught Scottish born painter Jack Vettriano, the painting depicts an elegant experience of a man and a woman. Its portrait-like qualities seem to tell a story to the viewer and have made this painting one of Vettriano’s most popular.

Vettriano made a name for himself by creating realistic paintings that portray beautiful people enjoying the finer things in life. This painting follows suit. The oil on canvas portrait uses black, white and different hues of gray to evoke the night. The viewer is given a glimpse of a couple up close, with more couples elegantly dancing in the background. The man’s black tuxedo and the woman’s barely white gown and gloves are drawn with the lines of a movie poster. The ashen background appears to move as the couple dances the night away.

Dance Me to the End of Love is a contemporary piece of art that uses skillful painting to create a realistic image. The popularity of this painting has been the inspiration for thousands of replicas and posters sold around the world.

One of Jack Vettriano's most popular paintings, Dance Me To The End Of Love, has been sold at auction in Edinburgh.
The image shows a couple waltzing in the mist. The print is one of the world's best-selling posters, but the original has rarely been seen.

The canvas was bought by a Scots art collector in 1998 and remained in the woman's private possession until now.

It was snapped up by a buyer with a bid of £290,000. Including the buyer's premium, the total price was £337,000.
It was sold to an unidentified bidder from the floor at Saturday's auction.

Richard Longwill, director of Edinburgh auction house Shapes, said the sold original had seldom been seen.

He added: "Interestingly, the original is much wider than the printed version and has a great feeling of light and space.

"Vettriano handles the light skilfully; the moonlight bathing the dancing couples has an ethereal, luminescent quality."

Self-taught Vettriano has been largely shunned by the traditional art world, with major UK galleries refusing to acquire his works.

However, the Fife-born artist has huge popular appeal.

His work The Singing Butler sold for almost £750,000 in 2004, the highest price ever paid for a Scottish painting at auction.

The artist last year denied claims that he privately copied characters from The Singing Butler and other paintings from a 1987 illustrators' guide.
